Obituary

Donald "Don" Peter Sochaski was born on November 25, 1956 in Invermay, SK to Peter and Pauline Sochaski. He was the third of five boys. Don and his brothers Lawrence, John, Dale and Darren grew up on a farm just west of Ridgedale where they spent their time hunting, trapping, fishing, playing sports and causing general havoc around the farm. The stories of these five are infamous and the boys loved getting together to reminisce about the trouble they got in together, the fish they caught or the deer that got away.
Don attended Ridgedale School where he met his high school sweetheart, Bev Atkings. After high school, Don completed his apprenticeship with the Beeland Coop Service Station in Tisdale, attending Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon where he obtained his journeyman motor vehicle mechanic certificate. Don and Bev did everything together. You could always count on seeing them together at the ball diamond, hockey rink or poker rally as Don was part of the Ridgedale Regals ball team, Ridgedale Rainbows hockey team and Valley Riders snowmobile club. In 1978, Don and Bev were married and bought their first home in Tisdale.
.In 1981, Don and Bev welcomed their daughter, Lindsey and a year later moved back to Ridgedale. Their son, Mitch was born in 1984 and as the kids grew up, Don happily made the transition from player to coach. He was a constant teacher of all things outdoors and loved the opportunity to take someone out on his boat to help them catch that big fish or guide them to a good hunting spot.
In 2011, after 35 years, Don retired from the Beeland Coop and shortly after took a position at Bow Mar Sales in Tisdale where he continued his love of helping and visiting with customers. In 2012, Don took on his favorite job of all as Gido with the birth of his and Bev's first grandchild, Oliver followed by Amelia in 2014 and Owen in 2015. To Don, nothing was more important than family and he spent as much time as possible with his grandkids who were his biggest fans.
Don loved living in Ridgedale. He and Bev established a beautiful yard and large garden. You would often find him on his garden tractor tidying up areas around town or helping out a neighbour with a project. His other favorite pastimes were cheering for his teams, the Riders, Jays and Oilers, and socializing at the Ridgedale curling rink lounge.
On April 5, 2019, Don passed away with his family by his side at the Tisdale Hospital. Don was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Pauline and father-in-law Jack Atkings.
Don is lovingly remembered by his wife Bev; children: Lindsey (Travis) Bunnell, Mitch (Danielle Walker) Sochaski; grandchildren: Oliver and Amelia Bunnell and Owen Sochaski; brothers: Lawrence (Laurie), John (Debbie), Dale (Monica) and Darren; mother-in-law Carol Atkings, brother-in-law Darryl (Debbie) Atkings; sister-in-law Debbie (Trevis) Sturby and many nieces and nephews.

In Don's memory and as a tribute to his life, the family requests that you spend time reconnecting with family and friends as life is too short not to.

Sheldon Oleksyn

Dear Bev and Family,

I was just in Tisdale this past weekend and learned from my Mom, Edna Oleksyn, about the passing of your husband Don. It was shocking news to me as I was not aware of his illness.

Don had a unique place in our family because of his relationship with my Dad, Dave Oleksyn. Don and Dave got to know each other at Beeland Co-op when Dad and his buddies would meet at the Co-op coffee shop to "check-in" and solve the problems of the world over coffee. Somehow Don got pulled into the discussions and probably made the most sense out of the group! After a while Dad and Don would go fishing together and really enjoyed those times on the water soaking up the sun, the silence and each other's company. When Dave passed away in June of 2007, we asked Don to be a pall bearer knowing Dad would have wanted that.

In subsequent years, Don was kind enough to take a group of Dave's children and grandchildren fishing by Nipawin, always refusing to accept payment for his time and expenses. It was during those times that we really came to know the depth of Don's friendship with our Dad. I still remember with a smile some of the humorous stories Don told us about our Dad.

There is plenty of room in heaven for men of character and loyalty like Don. He was a friend to everyone and an enemy to none. He spoke his mind with honesty and without malice or conceit. His children and grandchildren will do well to follow his example of integrity and service without expectation of return.

The Oleksyn family is grateful for having known him and enjoyed his company. May Don rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon him.
