Obituary for Selma Carolina Person (Johnson)

Selma Carolina Person (Johnson)
Selma Carolina Person (nee Johnson) was born on December 26, 1932 to Tina and Frank Johnson at Bagley, Saskatchewan, the second child, where three more would follow. She attended the Carrot River country schoolhouse getting her grade eight. From there she found work helping with domestic duties for various families in the Melfort area.
She would soon attract the attention of a handsome young man by the name of Einar Person who lived not far from the Johnson’s farm, and on July 10, 1952 they were married at the Bagley Baptist Church, a romance that would last 66 years. In 1955 they were blessed with twins, a boy and a girl. They then purchased the August Palm farm in the Bagley district where they would work and live for the next 58 years. Together she and Einar worked hard on their mixed farm, raising their family and both involved themselves in their community in every aspect.
Selma loved gardening and getting her hands dirty in her flower beds which adorned the yard. The yard was always manicured to perfection. Whether it was milking cows, hauling grain, butchering chickens, whatever the job, she worked tirelessly, never afraid to tackle anything. Inside the house her work continued as a homemaker. She was a fabulous cook and loved to entertain friends and neighbors with her great meals. She was also an accomplished seamstress and spent many hours with her sewing machine humming, sewing clothes for the twins, and also was called upon to sew many bridesmaid dresses and then make the wedding cake. Her three tiered wedding cakes were a work of art. Her twenty five cent haircuts, or her “toni perms” also kept her barbershop busy. But most of all Selma was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her family was first and foremost and the grandchildren who she was blessed with received all her adoration in every way she could give them.
But her generous and giving spirit extended far beyond her own family. She was a dedicated member of the Bagley Baptist Mission Circle all her life. Also three times she was able to go on a mission trip to Mexico to help build a house for those in need which gave her a lot of joy. Her strong faith in God was her guiding force throughout her whole life. She never wanted to bring attention to herself as she did her work.

Christmas was her favorite and special time of the year; maybe that’s why God brought her into this world on December 26th. She loved to decorate for Christmas and light up the yard with lights and decorations. Hosting people at Christmas gave her a chance to share all the Christmas baking and cooking she loved to do. She was quite thrilled to see the old Melfort Post Office turned into the Christmas Castle which she visited many times. Her last Christmas was the best one ever. Christmas Eve was spent together with family at Rhonda and Mylo’s home and then Christmas Day at Lynne and Russ’s where she cooked the turkey and helped Lynne with the meal. Then on the 29th the family all gathered at Lynnel and Lois’s home on the farm at Preeceville. Not one family member missed being with her over this Christmas. As she held babies and hugged her grandchildren around the Christmas tree which was all aglow and listened to grandchildren play Christmas carols on the piano, this perhaps gave her a glimpse of heaven.
The end came suddenly and on the last day of the year after all her family members had said their goodbyes, she slipped away peacefully into the arms of Jesus at the Regina General Hospital with her loving Einar holding her hand and surrounded by those she loved.
Well done good and faithful servant, now go and rest in peace.
Forever loved by her loving husband, Einar, daughter Lynne and husband Russ, son Lynnel and wife Lois, grandchildren Megan (Nathan), Sarah (Jesse), Jessica (Jon), Devon (Elly), Bjorn, Ellise (Matthew), and 14 great grandchildren, sisters Lily and Julie, brother Roy.
Awaiting her in heaven is her father Frank and mother Tina, her sister Linda, and great grandson Leif.
