Obituary for Robert 'Bob' Brian Harley

Robert 'Bob' Brian Harley
Robert Brian Harley
October 2, 1926 – April 20, 2018

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Robert “Bob” Harley at Chateau Providence, St. Brieux, SK following a stroke suffered in November 2017.
Robert will be sadly missed by his wife of 70 years, Myrta (nee Worden); his children: Bryan (Berni) of Neepawa, MB and Candace (Paul) of Kingston, ON; his brothers: Don (Betty), Warren (Doreen), Leslie (Arlene); his sisters: Joyce, Norma, Regona (Harold); sister-in-law Lila Green-Demsys (Walter Demsys); daughter-in-law Debbie of Calgary, AB and Aunt Deat.
Robert was predeceased by his son Daryl of Calgary, AB; his brother Gerald and sister Veda.
Robert was a proud grandfather to: Beth, Jane and Kristen Harley; Dustin, Amber and Bryn Harley; Crystal, Brianne and Ben Dufresne as well as 14 great grandchildren.
Robert was born in Melfort, SK to Reginald and Belle. For the first few years they lived near Resource, SK, moving later to Somme, SK. Dad left school at 13 years old and spent five years working for area farmers. He joined the Canadian Army at 18 years old and left the army when WWII ended. He rejoined the army in 1951 and retired in 1977.
Dad met mom in 1947 and they were married in January 1948. Army life meant many moves across Canada including: Petawawa, ON, Shilo, MB, Cobourg, ON, Ottawa, ON and Winnipeg, MB. Dad served for one year with the United Nations Emergency Force in the Suez Canal, Egypt. Dad and mom returned to Melfort in 1977 and have remained here since.
Over the years, dad’s sense of service to his community became well known. Dad had been a Boy Scout Leader for decades and upon returning to Melfort, he became an Air Force Cadet leader for many years. He also became active with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, Ducks Unlimited, Masonic Lodge, Carrot River Watershed Authority, Melfort Farmers Market, St. Brieux Legion, Federal Superannuates National Association, Melfort Town Council, Melfort Agricultural Society and the Federal and Provincial New Democratic Party.

In lieu of gifts, flowers and cards, a memorial donation may be made in Robert’s name directly to the: Melfort & District Museum (Box 3222 Melfort, SK S0E 1A0)
